The first initiative to create an association was taken in 1981, and the association was formally established 1983.

  Membership IASSMD  (the present IASSID) from 1983.

Acceptance as a  ‘Speciality Branch’ in The Norwegian Medical Association was achieved in  1984. (There exists however no formal speciality.)

Membership  of MAMH from 2001.

The main purpose of the association is to promote professional understanding of medical aspects connected to intellectual disability and other developmental disabilities and of habilitation throughout the whole life span, hereby:

• -     promote scientific and professional development,

• -     contribute in- and outwardly to effectuation of knowledge, and by doing so promoting multidisciplinary approaches,

• -     present itself as an organisation willing, towards a broad public, to give advise in professional questions concerning
   intellectual disability, developmental disabilities and multi-handicap.
